Question Four: What minimum resources (basics e.g. staffing, technology, funding, facilities, food) support the initiative and success of learning communities?

 

Group One: What does success mean? Have we acheived succes? What is the miniumum?

  • How visible dolearning communites need to be?
  • Someone needs to step into roles of facilitator, coordinator, recorder, engager, disseminator
  • How fixed are these roles? Rotating? Experience says fixed works
  • Does there need to be a hierarchical system? Or larger informational system; previous experience had a paid staff person to stay on task.
  • Structured communication is very important can be in different forms.
  • Food, nourishment, transportation, care, bathroom, etc.
  • People who are invested in the learning process
  • National office provides funding for networking/support (luxury)

 

Group Two

  • Training for new members of a community orientation not indoctrination
  • Someone in authority (amanger, etc.) to support ideas, change
    • Authority figure needs to follow-up with actions
  • Realistic funding must be available.
  • Shared language (different languages, not vocabulary)

 

Group Three

  • Care, balancing of challenge and support
  • Long term strategic context
    • Generativity
    • Succession planning
    • Direction
    • Know-how to re-adjust
    • Functioning form of communication
    • Committment to put energy into fluid process for the future

 

Group Four

  • Facilities can vary. Learning experiences can take place in different venues (walking, metings, etc.)
  • Knowlege of what people want/care about
    • Direction
  • Listserv/websites; conference calls/phone
    • Keep connected, make group decisions, engage
  • Freedom for fluidity and creativity - funding can cary ties
  • Accountability (to whom?)
  • Context dependent
  • Resources in different forms
  • Micro cultural (?) - How things should work. Different ideas.
  • Ask what needs are
    • How does technology/reosurces/money...meet these needs?
  • Time (in community and for reflection - need both)
    • Commitment to this time
